Sooner or later everyone is bound to get a traffic ticket. Receiving a ticket can often mean taking several hours, if not days, off of work, waiting in long lines, and paying high court fines. Additionally, failing to properly negotiate a traffic ticket could result in points against your record (this should hyperlink internally to the demerit point system below) and increases in your insurance (this should hyperlink to the insurance increases section below). Getting a ticket doesn't have to be a disaster, and here are some things you should know:

Demerit System

Nevada assigns a points to many moving violations, and these points will show up on your driving record. Every traffic ticket you receive (excluding parking tickets) will increase the points on your record, and if you have too many in a short amount of time, you might find yourself in trouble. If you receive 12 points in 12 months your license will be automatically suspended. The DMV will send you a warning once you have three or more points on your record.

Points for common traffic violations include:

  • Reckless driving: 8 points

  • Careless driving: 6 points

  • Following too closely: 4 points

  • Failing to yield right-of-way: 4 points

  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian: 4 points

  • Disregarding traffic light or stop sign: 4 points (also known as failure to obey a traffic control device)

  • Driving too slow: 2 points

  • Speeding (up to 10 mph over limit): 1 point

  • Speeding (11-15 mph over limit): 2 points

  • Speeding (16-20 mph over limit): 3 points

  • Speeding (21 mph or more over limit): 4 points

  • Speeding (1-15 mph over limit in school zone): 4 points

  • Speeding (16 mph or more over limit in school zone): 6 points

Impact on Insurance

A traffic ticket can negatively impact your standing with your insurance company which could result in insurance increases. Even one ticket can cause increased payments to your insurance company. Anyone who has received a ticket, should check with their individual insurance carrier to determine whether their rates will increase since some companies only count convictions, and others will not penalize you if you've taken care of the ticket through traffic school.

Prevent Traffic Tickets By Being A Safe Driver

The reality is that simply being a safe driver will help you avoid a lot of hassle and paperwork. For information about driver safety and driving tips contact the DMV.

Taking Care of Your Ticket

While simply pleading guilty to a traffic offense and paying a fine may seem like a good option, this can not only cause insurance increases and points, but multiple traffic offenses could result in a suspended driver’s license as stated above. Let Traffic Angels Fight Your Ticket Today.
